Education at Northrise University includes the opportunity to serve the people of Zambia, in particular, the City of Ndola. This is partially accomplished by the link of academic study to community service. In serving the community, NU students are required to participate in Service Learning. This is an avenue by which students learn and develop through active participation in organized service, which is conducted in and meets the needs of the community. This service is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum and provides students with structured opportunities for critical reflection on their service experience. It also enhances students' appreciation of themselves and societal and civic issues, as well as encourages students' commitment to be active citizens throughout their lives. The following are orgnizations and ministries in which NU participates:
Mapalo Community School
Mapalo is community school for orphans that was started by one of Northrise's graduates. Pastor Emil Mukuka started the school out of a heart to reach out to the vulnerable in society. Friends of Northrise through Northrise encourage the efforts of Pastor Mukuka by offering financail and moral support for school building projects and the feeding program at the school.
Arising Life Ministries
ALM is a ministry for orphaned and vulnerable children. This center was opened on 2nd July 2009 by Mrs. Joyce Chimbila, a Northrise University student. Mrs. Chimbila indentified the need in her community of Mushili Township and decided to venture into this ministry to help children who are unable to attend regular school. The center helps children from first grade through grade seven. It then sponsors the children to further their education at high school level. Northrise University supports the center through logistics for school materials as well as funding for the on going building and sanitation projects through the friends of Northrise.
The Ndola Vision Ministry was born out of a great need identified by the friends of Northrise. Zambia is one of the poorest nations in the world. In Zambia, educational opportunities beyond secondary or high school are limited. Good health services, where available, are beyond the reach of those who need them the most. This situation is not made any better by the ravages of HIV/AIDS and other tropical diseases. The big picture for the Ndola Vision ministry is to have as many people as are touched by the Lord from all over the world, to come and minister to the community in Ndola through Northrise University and impact the city in a positive way.
Arthur Davision Children's Hospital (ADH)
ADH is the only children's hospital in the whole city of Ndola. Northrise and its partners recognize the short supply of medical supplies faced by the hospital. It is for this reason that Northrise University has partnered with the ADH to support the hospital through its partners by supplementing government efforts of medicines and hospital equipment for the patients. Northrise and its partners will continue to support ADH by donations of medical supplies and pediatric equipment.
